Any other refs feel like they are not appreciated sometimes? I mean when you do a good job pple just seem to ignore you but when you make a bad call (real or imagined) you never hear the end of the comments or the argument. Very rarely do you get a comment about how you reffed well or how pple enjoy the way you run games. Am i the only one or do other of you guys deal with the same thing?

Yes and no. Many people knew that I had a difficult job to do, reffing an airball field, and they gave me thanks quite a bit. But after the owner saw how nuts things went one day with one ref and like twenty or more players on the field, he decided that measures needed to be taken. He wanted no more than 10 players on the field with only one ref, with two, we could go up to 20, but that rarely ever happened, we pretty much capped at 14. When the times came that I was the only ref there, and I enforced the 10 person cap (On a woodsball field, I can generally handle up to about 30 people), they all grumbled. I was honest with them, there was enough FEMALE DOGing and griping with two refs and 14 players that I was not going to deal with 14 of them and only one of me. In woodsball, I have no problem being in the middle to call a game and move as needed, but with tourney ball, I stay to one side, and move as needed, but it can take a moment to go to check someone in an opposite tape bunker as I am not going to go running right though the middle of several DM's, Shockers, Timmies, and/or Ego's ripping it up.

It's not the really the unappreciation I grow tired of, it's more of peoples' attitudes, the attitude that they deserve every call. One time I had a player call for a check, he has a hit, I pull him, and he acts like I just talked crap about his family. Another time some guy got hit in his hopper, you know how some of those hits are but you could tell it was a hit, and he starts to argue with me about it, then you have to threaten to pull more players for them to get to the dead box. That is what I grow tired of, is the arrogant attitude.

I am no ref, but I have actually thought of this before. I know nobody really shows their appreciation, but they do appreciate them. Keep up the awesome work refs!

Yes and no...

I mean, I feel appreciated, sorta...Not as much as I wish I was.

When I ref, I'm not given a hard time, since it's usually just Outlaw games that we have players ref at. It's not like we have players that say "COW SHIZZLE, Ref! I'm in! And I'm staying in!" but...Sometimes I would really like a pat on the back and told "Hey, Good job reffing today, we couldn't have played with out ya."

Know what I'm saying?...

The other things is the way the sponsored players act. They don't pay field fee. They get a discount on paint. Many of them are refs, or at least ref during special events. And every time, they treat me like crap. I don't treat them any different than anyone else. But seeing as how they are sponsored, the ought to be doing little things to help. They don't, and they FEMALE DOG and whine about how they don't get their way. Only one guy, and he is not longer playing on a sponsored team, compliments me on getting out there, getting shot up to check a person.

I guess part of why I don't get the back talk from players, when I call them out, is because I tell them where they are hit, and I am not afraid to check them during the game, sometimes with as many as five markers on the player (Meaning me )

Yea that is the kinda stuff i realy hate. Its like they think you have some personal grudge against them or are ONLY looking at them not anyone else. But it is nice to know that i'm not the only one that deals whit the crap players throw our way.

Every wednesday our rec district has speedball play and I volunteer to ref but I get treated like crap. If I wasnt there they would have to ref themselves (when one team isnt playing it refs). I dont think any of them want to so its me and the local feild own out there reffing. I'm starting to hate going to ref its just not fun anymore

zWarlord, I'm going to guess you're a younger guy... twentysomething or younger, perhaps? There are many jobs in life that are very neccesary, but at the very least, go unnoticed, and are sometimes just flat out unappreciated. When was the last time you thanked the guy who picks up your trash, or plows your city streets? A referee is a part of the paintball infrastructure. All that matters is that you understand this, and still enjoy your job, do you best, and help promote the sport. The world of paintball is made up of many kinds of players. Some are prima-dona bloodclots, but I would never tell them that on the field (nor talk about someone behind their back). Some players are very honorable (and a tip of my hat to the players in this forum that said "thank you"). I've been playing since 1986 and have never argued with a referee, even when I thought it was a "bad call". Not everyone is perfect - players or referees. Really consider the source of the bad comments you're hearing, also. Think about how you feel about the police/deputies. It's a thankless, high risk, low paying job... but someone's got to do it. Every once in a while someone comes along who does it because they honestly believe in what they've doing. Just make sure you're trying to be one of those guys making a difference.

Very well stated Mars. I have also been playing and reffing since 1986 and have had many bad days but I keep going because I love to. I treat everyone the same no matter what, I have reffed nppl pros and psp d1 to new players i had to show how to move the safety. If anyone gets the chance ref a SPPL event those guys almost alway thank the refs. If you are tired and burned out try walking away for a time. If sponsored player are being dog heads about the reffing talk to their sponsor. Telling a person were they are marked even in a national level game always helps because the person has one less agurment that they can use. Rember make your call and stick by that call (if its a bad call learn from it) and hear what players say between game you may learn of trouble spots before they blow up.

I have always felt like the better I was able to do my job on the field the less I was noticed. This is a position that naturally will be over-looked after a game is over. People get to telling thier stories of conquest in the recent game and most times don't mention the ref that ran across the field to do a paint check. It is what it is. I just love it so much I couldn't imagine not reffing anymore.

okay guys sometimes i do feel unappreciated but then i remember what it was like when i was a cop. see most of the people you are dealing with that make you feel unappreciated are the ones doing something wrong( or there attitude just sucks) then i remember all the people that are having fun because i yanked that guy who was playing on/cheating and didnt let him give me or any one else crap.Some people just push the limits as far as they can till someone stops them. that person is YOU. nobody likes getting a speeding ticket but everyone is glad to see a cop when they need help. my biggest frustration is like you said when your are overwhelmed by two many players. this should be adressed by the field owner.
